JHF June 2001 Summary

Dear JHF Members:

Minutes of the May Meeting of the Jessee Historical Foundation PO Box 1617 Lebanon, VA 24206(added 5-9)

The second board meeting was held at the Peking Garden on Saturday, May 5, 2001 at 11:00 am with 21 people in attendance. Joe Jessee, president, called the meeting to order. This was followed by the invocation given by Cecil Jessee. No pledge of allegiance was said as a flag was unavailable. Minutes of the first meeting were read and approved. The agenda was presented and approved.

Irene Perry declined the Recording Secretary position due to the distance she would have to travel. However, Ms. Perry did agree to serve on the Board. J.D. Jessee was named to fill Ms. Perry's position. No one was named as (changed 5-9) Correspondence Secretary, and Tolby Jessee will serve if Ms. Mahone can not fulfill her duties(changed 5-9). Hank Davis would serve as the Foundation's legal council.

The annual Research Day will be held at the Russell County Library on August 3, 2001. It is requested that all family items, pictures, history, etc. be brought for display that day. Joy and Mike Malone have made and mailed to 120 family members an informative pamphlet regarding this day.

The annual picnic at this time is scheduled to be held August 4 at the Russell County Fairgrounds west of Castlewood, Virginia on Route 58A approximately one mile from the Clinch River and the Wise County line (added 5-9). Talby Jessee will check on the possibility of using the Fair Grounds in Lebanon for this year's festivities. Cecil Jessee recommended that music (any entertainment) be at a specific time and a shelter be used for this purpose. Activities would be available for children and teen members. Joy submitted an outline of planning and things to think about for the picnic. Irene Perry has painted a fabulous picture of Jessee's Mill and donated it to be auctioned off at the picnic. Trust me you will want this painting! It was suggested that members bring items for the auction. Money raised will go toward the historical marker as well as toward the restoration of the mill and cemetery. A starting bid of $1,000.00 (changed 5-9) has been set for the painting. This painting will be on display at the Russell County Library until the day of the picnic. Prints will probably be made of the painting and sold by the Foundation (added 5-9).

A membership table will be set up on Research Day and the picnic. Joy and Mike have made a certificate and card. If dues of $10 are paid by December 31, 2001 you will receive the "Charter Member" (added 5-9) certificate plus the card. After December there will be a certificate and a (changed 5-9) card. A membership form will be for all to fill out. If you have a mailing label please use it... saves time. We must (changed 5-9) maintain an accurate membership list! A newsletter will come out after the picnic. Last year 11 states were represented at the picnic.

Adjourned for lunch around 12:30 pm (changed 5-9) and recalled to order at 1:00 p.m. (changed 5-9).

J.C. Jessee reported that $1,300 (this changed from year to year)[changed 5-9] will be needed for the Jessee Mill historical marker. VDOT will put up and maintain the sign.

Virginia has a law that allows a cemetery to be restored and maintained if a Revolutionary War Veteran is buried there. Access will be required to get to the burial plot. The Foundation wishes to restore the cemetery of John and Franky (Frances) [added 5-9].

A general and history book is hoped to be published within 5 years. Kathleen Robertson was suggested to be of assistance in publishing the book.

Hank Davis reported on the Foundation's by-laws. He reviewed the document. Some things were: membership fee of $10 by all at the present time and these dues are (changed 5-9) set by the board; any spelling of the Jessee name will be accepted as a member; and 1/3 of 25 board members will be a quorum to conduct business (added 5-9). The by-laws were adopted by those present and will be submitted at the picnic. Copies of the Corporate Charter and By-laws were available at the meeting (added 5-9). Officers for the Foundation will be presented for election at the membership meeting are: Joseph H. Jessee, Jr. - President; Laura Jessee Thomas - Vice President; Mary H. Akers - Membership Secretary; J. D. Jessee - Recording Secretary; Norma McHone - Treasurer (added 5-9).

Joe requested reimbursement of $20 for the Foundation's P.O. Box 1617 in Lebanon, VA and $150 for the application of the IRS form 8718 (added 5-9). No number (changed 5-9) has yet to be received. Motion to reimburse was made and carried (added 5-9).

We hope to do a newsletter and membership. Discussion was held regarding accruing someone to print the letter - possibly to expensive. There may be a biannual membership newsletter, the first sometime after the picnic. J.D. Jessee and Mike Malone will explore the newsletter possibility perhaps using a private firm with "non-profit organization" USPS authorization (added 5-9).

Adjourned at 2:30 pm (?)

Respectively submitted by Mary Akers, Acting Recording Secretary.

Changes and additions were made by Joe Jessee - President on May 9, 2001.
