A great deal of effort has been expended by the JHF Board and Members during our first year as a Foundation and I would like to recognize all the members for their support and contributions. Each one is important to our Foundation. We are still in an ongoing learning curve in what we hope to accomplish. If we succeed, I hope we may become even more dedicated and work even harder for success and also to share that success with others.
The following is an unapproved synopsis, that is not all inclusive, of the August 2002 JHF Board Meeting and Annual Members Meeting held at the RC Public Library in Lebanon, VA and the October 2002 Board Meeting held at Stringer's Restaurant in Abingdon, VA as viewed only from a member's perspective. (The unapproved minutes of the business of the Board will be read for approval [& corrections] at the March 1, 2003 Bd. Mtg. by the acting recording secretary.)
The August Board and Annual Meetings were held in Lebanon, VA and dealt primarily with the Annual Jessee Reunion Picnic and Activities. A quorum was present and the officers and committee chairs reported. Thanks and appreciation were given to Toby Jessee, Picnic Chair, who reported on all the work that was completed for the success of the picnic. Discussions included the following: President's first newsletter (mailed to members in November); the Membership Secretary's renewal member applications and revision of the fees per age category (yearly member fee $10.00, and lifetime fee 50 - 60 yrs. $200.00, 61 - 70 yrs. $150.00, 71 - 80 yrs. $100.00, and 81 + free); status of the Historical Highway Marker and Jessee's Mill, etc. Newly appointed Board Member, Vernon L. Salyers, was congratulated. During the picnic activities, decisions were made by the majority of the members to move the Jessee Reunion Picnic to the third Saturday in June (2003 picnic will be June 21) and to hold the picnic in the air-conditioned facilities at the Harry L. Coomes Recreation Center in Abingdon, VA. Note: All members are invited to attend JHF Meetings.
The October Board Meeting was held in Abingdon, VA. A quorum was present
and member guests included Mike Malone (FL) and Tom Rudder (CA). The officers
and committee chairs reported with several reports to be reviewed during the
March 2003 Meeting. The 2003 meeting dates were established as
follows: March 1 (Saturday, 10 am - 2 pm), June 20 (Friday, 4 pm - 6 pm), October
4 (Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm). Some of the discussions and/or moves are as follows:
The Budget Committee to present a draft of the 2003 budget at the March meeting
with review of the Treasurer's report and anticipated expenditures sent to the
committee by December 15; a Nominating Committee was established to seek Board
member candidates; the Annual Report, a Jessee's Mill Historical Preservation
Site Committee was formed (initial work underway), the JHF to assume sponsorship
of the Jessee Family History and Research Day (previously private member sponsored);
planning of the 2003 Research Day and Reunion Picnic activities; resolutions
re: JHF Mailing Lists and Membership Roster, promotion of JHF projects with
Board approval, JHF Non-Affiliation status; need for a Ways and Means Committee;
and, etc., etc., etc., etc. Thanks to all the Jessees, friends, and neighbors
for supporting the JHF during this past year!
On a Personal Note: This member and her husband especially wish to thank Mr. Tom Rudder (CA) for sharing of his time and expertise on family history and site locations with us during his visit to Russell County. We also shared a great day with Tom at the Clinchco, VA reunion on Sunday held at the high school. On Another Note: We send a special invitation to each and everyone of you and hope to meet all of you in 2003 (Research Day June 20, RC Public Library in Lebanon, VA and the Reunion Picnic June 21, Coomes Rec. Center in Abingdon, VA). This is a unique opportunity to meet your "cousins."
Respectively Submitted,
